Stop #4 - Day 2 Zurich, Switzerland
From Lisbon, Portugal, I took the early
flight to Zurich. The flight was at 0710AM and I left the hotel at
about 0530AM. At that time, the
Aerobus
was not yet available as the first run was at 0700H. The subway also
started its run at 0600H and the overnight bus was erratic. So, I
shelled out EUR20 from the hotel to the airport.
Rey picked up me at Zurich Airport and their
house was less than 10 minutes away. Once settled, the Talattad
families and I took the bus # 61/62 towards Oerliken station and from there,
the train towards Zurich Central Station. We got ourselves a day pass
each for CHF5.20 since we went around Zurich by public transport - the best
and most convenient means to go sightseeing.
From the central train station, we walked
around downtown Zurich and passed by one of the department stores.
True to being tourists, had our picture taken with the biggest Toblerone
chocolate bar and treated ourselves with a lot of free food tasting at the
grocery department.
Zurich was similar to Geneva but was a bit
bigger. We went around the
Old Town (Alstadt)
and saw the Fraumunster,
which was one of the famous gothic churches in Zurich with its glass
paintings; the
Grossmunster which was also known as "Twin Towers"; and the walk around
Old Town was very interesting. By lunch, we went back to Central Station and met up with Gabi
and her eldest daughter, Mimi. Went to Federal restaurant and they
offered a nice selection of Swiss beer and authentic Swiss food. After
lunch, we went to Uetliberg
(Top of Zurich) which was a 20 minute train ride from Central Station on
the line S10. It was an adventurous hike especially stairwalk of the
look-out tower. Joy was only able to make it half-way the tower and
decided not to pursue. The tower gave us a very picturesque glimpse of
Zurich and the alps.
From Uetilberg, we went back to downtown and
spent most of the time there and got ourselves Swiss souvenirs.
